A tradition that began over 30 years ago is still going strong. Santa’s Elves is a charity program geared to provide holiday food to families in need.

Last year, they were able to give out 250 bags of food. The bags of food typically contain a ham, canned fruit, soup, meat and vegetables, macaroni and cheese, cereal, crackers and cookies.

It is believed that Katy Hayward began the program morethan30yearsago.Patty Sparlin has been part of the program for 30 years, and said Hayward started it because she saw the need in the community. Many residents have pitched in and helped make the program what it has become today.

They provide food baskets at Christmas time to families in need. Herschel Beard was a major cog in the mechanics of the program and was a major advocate for it. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2022, but people involved in the program are working hard to keep his love for the program going.

The program relies on fundraisers to be able to assist during the holidays. To fund this year’s program, they are hosting a Santa’s Elves Fundraiser from July 19 to July 28. It will be located at 115 Plaza on the square.

A garage sale will be held in the rear of the building, with the entry on Overton Street. The sale will have Christmas home décor, and much more. All the proceeds will go toward the Santa’s Elves program.
