Multiple players from the Kingston Redskins and Madill Wildcats were selected to be honored by District 2 in Class 3A this year. The awards and all-district squads were voted on by the eight coaches of the district in a meeting held last week.
The Madill Wildcats had three honorees. Senior offensive lineman Griffon Williams was selected to the first team offense. Senior defensive lineman Aaron Wilson was selected to the first team defense. Wilson finished the season with 31.5 tackles, 4.5 of those for losses, 1.5 sacks and a pass deflection. Among the honorable mentions was senior offensive lineman Armando Sanchez. Madill’s first-year head coach Chad Speer noted that Williams and Sanchez played hurt most of the season but graded out very well over the course of the year. He also stated that Wilson was “our best player on defense.”
Speer applauded all three of the players, calling them “great leaders and were beneficial to have in transitioning to our new program.” He was “very fortunate” to have them on his team, and “will be forever indebted to them” for their play and leadership.
Meanwhile, the Kingston Redskins had 12 honorees. Senior quarterback Jase Hayes was named co-MVP, along with Sulphur running back Logan Smith. Hayes finished 2020 completing 64 of his 102 passes for a 63% completion rate, for 1,401 yards, 11 touchdowns and only two interceptions, adding another 283 yards on 49 carries and 16 touchdowns on the ground.
Senior linebacker Bryant Watts was named Defensive MVP. Watts earned all-district honors for his second straight year, while leading the Redskins with 112 tackles. Watts also had two interceptions and two forced fumbles on the season.
Senior kicker Connor Short was Special Teams MVP. Winning the placekicker job after the Redskins’ seventh game, Short successfully converted 32 of his 33 attempts at extra points, and hit his only field goal attempt of the season, from 32 yards out.
Receiver of the Year for the district was senior tight end Matthew Hawkins. Hawkins led the Redskins with 388 yards on his 16 receptions, for four touchdowns and two 2-point conversions. Hawkins earned all-district honors in 2019 as a linebacker.
Senior center Jakey Williams was named co-Offensive Lineman of the Year, sharing the honor with Sulphur’s Sage Borders. This was the third consecutive year Williams was honored as an all-district player.
Jesse Rose was honored as the Defensive Lineman of the Year. The senior had 89 tackles, second-most on his team, and led the Redskins with 14 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles and a blocked punt, leading to him earning all-district honors for his second straight year.
Linebacker of the Year was senior Matthew Flesher. Flesher had 69 tackles for the Redskins, five for losses, and one of them for a safety. Flesher was an honorable mention for all-district in 2019.
Rounding out the individual player awards was senior Colton Robinson, the Defensive Back of the Year. Robinson was honored for the second straight year, after making 44 tackles for the Redskins, and intercepting four passes.
Kingston senior linebacker A.J. McKinney and senior defensive back Jarron “Boomer” Morgan were honored as part of the all-district defense. Honorable mentions included senior offensive lineman Dakota Beshirs. McKinney was part of last year’s all-district offense as a running back, while Morgan and Beshirs were first-time honorees.
Perhaps least surprising of all, Kingston coach Tommy Bare received his thirdstraight all-district Coach of the Year award. In his third year at Kingston, Bare led the Redskins to their third straight district title, and second straight undefeated district record, all while moving up to the tougher competition in Class 3A for the first time.
Coach Bare said that he was proud of his players “for being honored by the eight district head football coaches.” The selections were “reflective of the undefeated season that their team achieved.”
