The Ardmore Little Theatre put on another spectacular show. Roald Dahl’s Matilda Jr. The Musical on Sunday June 26, 2022, was the theater’s third performance of the season and a grand one for sure.

A short version of a tall performance can merely touch the surface, but if you missed it, will have to do. Matilda Jr. The Musical is based on a book by Dennis Kelly. The music and lyrics were by Tim Minchin. Considered a musical retelling of the Roald Dahl classic, Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence, and special powers, according to the description on the formal invitation. The story begins with Matilda and her not so nice and non-encouraging parents.

Matilda’s parents, for the most part is as discouraging and demeaning as possible even to the point of calling her a boy. Throughout the play, Matilda repeatedly disproves the assumptions of her parents and the school master.

The setting is in a private school and seems to have all the bad qualities one might expect of such an institution, that being more like a drop off for unwanted children. The performance rapidly progresses to reveal the wonderful qualities that all the children possess and the exemplary skills of the schoolteacher.

As hoped, the show ends with a complete turnaround, revealing all the goodness and ends by putting the school master in her place once and for all. The show could be described as a magical locomotive as each skit seemed to build with steam and then, at an unexpected move, would release with the angelic voices from scores of well-tuned children.

As if the story of Matilda isn’t grand enough, the way the crew and cast portray the story are as exciting and superior as it gets. A person who has attended some of the most famous theatres may think they have been to some superior performances. However, if they haven’t been to a show at the Little Theatre, argument of that would be top of the list.

In fact, if one has ever wondered where or perhaps how a star is born, Little Theatre performances is the answer. The entire cast was children and teens, yet somehow other than the wonder of their age, one would think they were seasoned actors. How the crew managed to do such a great job will remain a mystery but one thing for sure is they in fact did just that.

As for the production of Matilda Jr. the show is over, but the living art of the performance will linger until the next featured performance of the Little Theatre. Having attended this show is reason enough to say, it is a production that needs to be experienced.

A thank you is in order to a super star cast and crew and a special thanks for paving the way for such a worldwide talent and an art form that would make any theater jealous.
